The megacity Awakens to Hazardous Pollution Post Celebrations

On Tuesday morning residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with inhaling dangerously toxic air that fell into the "critical" level.

Record-Breaking Pollution Levels

Multiple areas of Delhi registered an air quality index exceeding 500, which translates to ten times the healthy threshold recommended by the World Health Organization.

Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of dangerous airborne particles soared to of 1,800, amounting to 15-20x higher than healthy levels.

Fireworks Ban and Recent Developments

Beginning in 2020, the government had maintained a total prohibition on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their major role to the hazardous pollution that blankets the city as winter approaches.

However recently, the current local administration approached the supreme court to seek a easing of the ban.

They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically criticized by conservation groups as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a balance between "heritage and environment".

Legal Ruling and Implementation

To the disappointment of medical and ecological activists, judicial authorities agreed to the proposal, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be set off during limited periods throughout the Diwali.

During the celebrations, there was considerable flouting of the designated hours across the capital, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly type.

Numerous monitoring devices throughout Delhi showed contamination peaking around late evening to some of the worst readings observed during the festival in at least the past three years.

Regional Implications

The widespread use of pyrotechnics during Diwali also sparked a blame game with adjacent Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistani the Punjab region partly blaming worsening atmospheric conditions in Lahore on contaminants coming from neighboring India following the events.

Persistent Environmental Crisis

Extremely elevated levels of pollution in the city have remained as a major issue for fifteen-plus years, with the condition gradually deteriorating.

Near the festival period, the amount of toxic particles in the environment has been found to shoot up to 70% higher the peak records ever measured in China's capital, which was once considered as the planet's dirtiest city.

Multiple Contamination Sources

This crisis in the capital is resulting from a combination of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, development work, garbage fires and smoke from agricultural fires in neighbouring regions of Punjab and Haryana.

In these regions, agricultural workers regularly ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, creating toxic haze that becomes contained over the city as cooler air arrives.

Public Health and Financial Toll

Both financial and medical impact on the nearly 33 million residents calling home the metropolitan zone is significant, according to multiple studies.

The contaminated air causes high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing disorders, and can result in malignancies.

Environmental contamination is calculated to be responsible for ten thousand early fatalities per year in the city.
