The Former President's Progressive Warning Misses Europe's True Danger: Economic Decline.

The recent US national security strategy offers a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies pose an existential risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The actual challenge facing Europe is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Growth Divide Separating Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, compared to a mere 13.5% growth for the EU. During this period, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, roughly half of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are American, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Problem

The growing disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity raises a pressing issue: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is Europe stand? Most analysts agree it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with Europe entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of major factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true capital markets union, which limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is divided among 27 different national regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance serious reform. Key reports on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of sweeping changes.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses considerable advantages: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations could unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically boost productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
