Fresh analysis reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users purchasing these medications need to be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to original mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the injections explains the amplified weight return.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
People who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful return of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle support.
