Cowboys Proprietor Jerry Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Obscene Gesture at Fans

The NFL has imposed a hefty $250,000 fine on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for an action he describes as an “inadvertent” obscene gesture made toward attendees during a Sunday’s game at the Jets’ stadium.

Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, but Jones insists he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team clinched a decisive win.

“It was regrettable. That was kind of an exchange with our fans out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”

He further clarified that the gesture was entirely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply showed the incorrect finger,” he noted. “The action was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. But it got corrected pretty quick.”

League Precedent for Proprietor Penalties

This is not the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Previous cases include:

  • Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
  • Then Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.

Jones, a figure who is known for his media savvy, possesses an approximate wealth of $16 billion, so the fine easily payable for the wealthy owner.

Recent Issues and Public Spotlight

The incident comes after a contentious offseason for Jones, who encountered widespread backlash from the Dallas supporters after the team dealt star pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a prominent subject in a streaming series that examined his role in developing the Dallas franchise into the world’s most valuable sports franchise, even with its modern-era title shortcomings.

The league’s decision to fine Jones highlights its ongoing initiative to uphold proper behavior among all team officials, regardless of their position or wealth.
